"Government Fraud: How They (Almost) Got Away With It"
Speaker Erin Hager will explore the many ways in which government employees have abused the public trust and lined their own pockets. This presentation includes detailed narratives of fraud cases investigated by the Arizona Office of the Auditor General, from initial intake through prosecution. Case studies include examples of actual documentation and techniques used during the case, and discussion of internal control deficiencies that facilitated the fraud.
Erin Hager, CFE, CPA is a senior auditor in the Arizona Auditor General's Special Investigative Unit. The Special Investigative Unit investigates allegations of illegal acts that affect public monies, and assists law enforcement agencies with criminal and civil prosecution of suspects. In the past ten fiscal years, the Special Investigative Unit has completed 34 investigations, discovered over $6.7 million of theft or misuse of public monies, and over $4.3 million in conflict of interest and procurement violations.
Erin earned her bachelor's degree in accounting from Arizona State University. Her professional experience prior to becoming a certified fraud examiner includes performance auditing, internal auditing, employee training, and office administration. She has conducted numerous internal training sessions, as well as fraud presentations for universities and professional associations. Erin is currently the president of the Arizona chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, which provides training and networking opportunities for over 200 active local members.
